About Sagrada Familia
The Sagrada Família is Antoni Gaudí's prayer in stone, a basilica that is at once a forest, a mountain, and a bible. It is an architecture of hallucination, organic and melting, with façade sculptures that narrate the life of Christ. Unfinished after more than a century, it grows slowly like a living organism, funded by the people. It is the undisputed icon of Barcelona, a building that divides opinion but demands attention.
From the air, the basilica is a massive construction site in the center of the Eixample grid. Its footprint is a Latin cross, surrounded by eight rising towers (eventually eighteen). It dominates the neighborhood, towering over the uniform apartment blocks. The differing colors of the stone show the passage of time and the stages of construction, from the weathered Nativity façade to the crisp, modern Passion façade.
Inside, the basilica is a forest of light. The columns branch like trees to support the ceiling, and the stained glass washes the nave in a rainbow of cool blues and warm reds. It feels less like a church and more like a spiritual nature walk. It is a place of wonder, a testament to one man's singular vision and a city's determination to finish the impossible.
