About Colosseum
The Colosseum is the ghost of Rome's imperial might, a broken stone tooth that still bites into the sky. It was the Flavian Amphitheatre, a machine for death and entertainment where gladiators and beasts fought before 50,000 roaring spectators. Even in its ruined state, the sheer scale of the travertine arches and the complexity of its design command silence. It is a monument to Roman engineering genius and Roman cruelty.
From the air, the oval shape is perfect and distinct, nestled in the valley between the Palatine, Caelian, and Esquiline hills. The missing outer wall on the south side gives it its characteristic broken profile. Inside, the "hypogeum"—the underground maze of tunnels and cages—is exposed like the guts of the beast, revealing the backstage machinery that made the spectacles possible.
Walking its corridors, you can almost hear the roar of the crowd and the clash of steel. It is a place of ghosts. The Colosseum has survived earthquakes, stone robbers, and pollution to stand as the icon of Rome.
