About Los Angeles
Los Angeles International Airport, commonly referred to as LAX, is the primary international airport serving Los Angeles and its surrounding metropolitan area. It is a major hub for Alaska, American, Delta, and United, making it one of the few airports to be a hub for all three US legacy carriers.
The airport is famous for its "Theme Building," a space-age structure resembling a flying saucer that houses a restaurant. LAX operates four parallel runways. The central terminal area is a U-shaped horseshoe with nine terminals. It is notoriously busy, often ranking just behind Atlanta and Beijing in global traffic.
LAX is vital for transpacific travel. A massive modernization program is underway, including the "Automated People Mover" train to connect the terminals with the metro rail, aiming to fix the notorious traffic congestion of the central loop. It is the premier gateway to the West Coast.
