About JFK

John F. Kennedy International Airport is the main international airport serving New York City. Located in Jamaica, Queens, it is the busiest international air passenger gateway into North America. It serves as a hub for American Airlines and Delta Air Lines and is the primary operating base for JetBlue.

JFK is historically significant for its architecture, most notably the TWA Flight Center (now the TWA Hotel), a masterpiece of mid-century modern design by Eero Saarinen. The airport currently has six terminals, which are being unified and redeveloped in a massive overhaul project. The runways surround the central terminal area.

The airport handles flights from over 70 airlines globally. It is the starting point for many historic aviation routes, including the supersonic Concorde service to London and Paris. JFK is a cultural symbol of New York, often the first point of contact for immigrants and visitors to the United States.

🛰️ Satellite Identification Tips

At zoom 12, JFK's four runways form a distinctive pair of intersecting X patterns on the southwestern shore of Long Island, bordered by Jamaica Bay's marshlands to the south and west. The bay's shallow waters and meandering tidal channels create a unique green-brown wetland mosaic that makes JFK instantly recognizable. The individual terminal buildings are spread around a central loop road, unlike most airports' linear terminal arrangements. The Belt Parkway curves along the bay shore, and the dense Queens residential grid presses against the northern and eastern boundaries. The Rockaway Peninsula's thin barrier beach is visible across the bay to the south.
