About MetLife Stadium

MetLife Stadium is an open-air multi-purpose stadium at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey, 8 miles west of New York City. It is the home of the New York Giants and New York Jets of the National Football League (NFL). It is the only NFL stadium shared by two teams.

Opened in 2010 to replace Giants Stadium, it is the largest NFL stadium in terms of permanent seating capacity, with 82,500 seats. The stadium features a neutral grey design that can be illuminated in blue (for Giants) or green (for Jets) depending on the home team. Technology plays a huge role, with four massive corner video boards.

Despite being an open-air venue in the Northeast, it hosted Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014, the first Super Bowl held in a cold-weather city without a dome. It has also been selected to host the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, cementing its status as one of the world's most important sporting stages.

The venue is owned by MetLife Stadium Company LLC, a joint venture equally owned by the Giants and Jets organisations that receives no public funding and finances all operating costs from ticket-sale and concession revenue plus the naming-rights fee. The Giants organisation is controlled by the Mara and Tisch families (John Mara and Steven Tisch as co-chairmen), while the Jets have since January 2000 been owned by Robert Wood Johnson IV of the pharmaceutical Johnson & Johnson dynasty. The MetLife Insurance naming-rights deal signed in August 2011 for 425 million dollars across 25 years remains the second-most-lucrative such deal in American sports after Mercedes-Benz Stadium's Atlanta contract. Prior to MetLife, the venue's proposed naming rights had been offered to seven Fortune 100 firms who all declined citing insufficient New York media-market exposure.

🛰️ Satellite Identification Tips

At zoom 16, MetLife Stadium sits in the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey — technically outside New York City despite hosting two NYC teams. The stadium is surrounded by vast parking lots in the flat marshlands of the Hackensack River valley. The neighbouring Meadowlands Racetrack and the American Dream mega-mall are visible nearby. The New York City skyline, including the Freedom Tower, is visible approximately 10 km to the east. The stadium has a modern, angular exterior with four distinct entry plazas at each corner.

Additional features refine identification. The Meadowlands Racetrack sits immediately south of MetLife Stadium as a distinct elongated oval enclosed by a small grandstand and stables complex, still hosting harness horse racing five nights per week. The American Dream Mall's translucent domed roof spreads over 3 million square feet of retail space 300 metres north as an unmistakable multi-coloured pavilion. The Hackensack River's brown-green ribbon meanders through wetland conservation land immediately south of the venue as part of the Meadowlands Environmental Preservation Area. The Turnpike Extension of the New Jersey Turnpike passes east of the venue as an elevated six-lane ribbon feeding into the Lincoln Tunnel toll plaza. The Bergen County Freeway (New Jersey Route 3) runs north as a four-lane divided arterial connecting to Lyndhurst.
