About Bank of America Stadium
Bank of America Stadium is a football stadium located in uptown Charlotte, North Carolina. It is the home facility and headquarters of the Carolina Panthers of the National Football League (NFL) and Charlotte FC of Major League Soccer (MLS). The stadium opened in 1996 as Ericsson Stadium before Bank of America purchased the naming rights in 2004.
Designed specifically for football, the stadium features a classic bowl shape with 74,867 seats. It is known for its open-air design which integrates seamlessly into the Charlotte skyline. Massive bronze panther statues, called "Indomitable Spirit," guard the entrances, symbolizing the team's resilience.
Recent renovations have added a large LED screen, new locker rooms, and standing sections for soccer supporters. The stadium's location in the city center allows fans to walk easily from hotels and restaurants, creating a vibrant game-day atmosphere. It stands as a pillar of the Queen City's sporting identity.
Ownership of the venue passed to hedge-fund manager David Tepper's Tepper Sports & Entertainment holding in July 2018 following his 2.275-billion-dollar acquisition of the Panthers franchise from founding owner Jerry Richardson. Tepper subsequently announced a 650-million-dollar renovation programme in June 2024 to modernise the venue for a shared NFL-and-MLS future, including new hospitality suites and a dedicated soccer-configured lower tier. The Charlotte City Council contributed 650 million dollars of the renovation cost through hospitality-tax revenue, a public subsidy that generated significant local political controversy given Tepper's estimated personal net worth of 20.5 billion dollars. The venue's Bank of America naming-rights deal signed in 2004 for 140 million dollars over twenty years remains in force through 2034.
