About Anfield

Anfield is a football stadium in Anfield, Liverpool, Merseyside, England, which has a seating capacity of 53,394, making it the seventh largest football stadium in England. It has been the home of Liverpool Football Club since their formation in 1892. It was originally the home of Everton F.C. from 1884 to 1891, before they moved to Goodison Park after a dispute with the club president.

The stadium has four stands: the Spion Kop, the Main Stand, the Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand and the Anfield Road End. The record attendance of 61,905 was set at a match between Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1952. The ground converted to an all-seater stadium in 1994 as a result of the Taylor Report.

Anfield is world-famous for its atmosphere, particularly the singing of "You'll Never Walk Alone" before kick-off. The "Kop" end is one of the most celebrated stands in world football, known for its passionate support. Two gates at the stadium are named after former Liverpool managers: Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley. A statue of Shankly is situated outside the stadium.

The ground is owned directly by Liverpool Football Club and Athletic Grounds Limited, a subsidiary of Fenway Sports Group since the American ownership takeover completed on 15 October 2010 for approximately 300 million pounds. The plot at Anfield Road L4 0TH covers roughly 3.2 hectares between Walton Breck Road and Stanley Park, and the ground was granted grade-II listed status for none of its structural elements although the postwar terraced housing surrounding the Kop end and Kemlyn Road stand includes several conservation-area properties protected by Liverpool City Council since 1979. The ownership company posted matchday revenues of 111 million pounds in the 2023 accounts filed with Companies House.

🛰️ Satellite Identification Tips

At zoom 16, Anfield is a compact rectangular stadium nestled deep within a dense residential neighbourhood in north Liverpool. The recently expanded Main Stand dominates the western side, visibly larger and taller than the other three stands. Stanley Park is adjacent to the north, providing a green contrast. The stadium sits very close to Goodison Park (Everton's former ground), visible less than 1 km to the northeast — a unique proximity for two major football grounds.

Additional recognition clues sharpen identification. The pitch surface at Anfield sits approximately 1.5 metres below the surrounding street level, a legacy of the 1892 excavation into former sandpit ground, and this sunken profile creates a distinctive dark rectangle when compared against neighbouring roof lines. The distinctive terracotta-brick warehouses of the former Higson Brewery site sit 400 metres south along Stanley Road as a pale rust-red block visible on satellite imagery. The dual-carriageway A5058 Queens Drive orbital road passes 800 metres north and provides a helpful east-west orientation anchor. Everton FC's new ground under construction at Bramley-Moore Dock lies 2.5 kilometres southwest along the Mersey waterfront and shows as a fresh circular concrete footprint.
