About Mexico

Mexico is a vibrant tapestry of indigenous heritage and Spanish colonial influence, resulting in a culture that is rich, colorful, and unique. Located in North America, its geography is incredibly diverse, ranging from the deserts of the north and the snow-capped volcanoes of the center to the steamy rainforests and turquoise Caribbean beaches of the south. It is one of the world's megadiverse countries.

Mexico City, the capital built on the ruins of the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan, is one of the world's largest and most dynamic cities, filled with museums, markets, and history. The country is dotted with ancient archaeological sites like Chichen Itza, Teotihuacan, and Palenque, remnants of the sophisticated Maya and Aztec civilizations. Mexican cuisine, with its complex moles, tacos, and salsas, is recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Modern Mexico is a major economic power and cultural exporter, famous for Frida Kahlo, Mariachi music, and Day of the Dead traditions. It is a land of fiestas and deep religious devotion. From the artist colonies of San Miguel de Allende to the resorts of Cancun and Cabo, Mexico offers a profound depth of history and a warmth of spirit that captivates visitors.

Mexico is a federal republic of 31 states plus Mexico City, and the country's official long-form name is Estados Unidos Mexicanos—United Mexican States—a nomenclature that has caused occasional diplomatic confusion with its northern neighbour. The nation was born from an eleven-year war of independence against Spain (1810–1821) launched by a rural priest named Miguel Hidalgo, whose "Grito de Dolores" is re-enacted every 15 September at 11 pm from the balcony of the National Palace by the sitting president. Mexico briefly returned to monarchy from 1864 to 1867 under Emperor Maximilian I, an Austrian Habsburg archduke installed by Napoleon III of France, before being executed by firing squad on the Hill of the Bells at Querétaro. Spanish is the de facto national language, but the constitution recognises 68 indigenous languages as co-official, and Nahuatl alone still counts 1.7 million active speakers.

🛰️ Satellite Identification Tips

At zoom 3, two peninsulas give Mexico away instantly: a long, skinny desert finger running parallel to the Pacific coast on the west, and a flat green platform jutting east into the Caribbean. Between them the country narrows at a distinct waist. The northern half is predominantly tan desert, while the southern half shifts to lush tropical green. A massive grey urban blob sits on the high central plateau.

Additional features refine the identification once the twin peninsulas register. Popocatépetl volcano 70 kilometres southeast of Mexico City emits a distinctive plume that reaches 500 metres high on average and is visible from most cloud-free satellite passes. On the Baja peninsula, the Sea of Cortez separates the finger from the mainland as a narrow, extremely deep gulf sometimes called "the aquarium of the world" by Jacques Cousteau. The volcanic Paricutín cornfield in Michoacán, born from a single fissure in 1943 and grown to 424 metres in nine years, still shows as a dark cinder cone amid a lava field. Guadalajara sprawls across the Atemajac Valley as the second-largest urban footprint of the country, and Palenque in Chiapas hides in dense rainforest as a cluster of stepped pyramids barely visible under the canopy without lidar assistance.
