China is one of the world's oldest civilizations, with a continuous history stretching back thousands of years. It is the most populous country in the world and a dominant global economic power. Its vast territory covers a diverse landscape, from the arid Gobi Desert in the north and the Himalayas in the southwest to the fertile river basins of the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers and the tropical south.
Beijing, the capital, is the center of power and history, home to the Forbidden City and the Great Wall. Shanghai is the futuristic financial hub, famous for its towering skyline along the Bund. Xi'an holds the Terracotta Warriors, guarding the tomb of the first emperor. China's rapid modernization in recent decades has created boundless megacities and high-speed rail networks, contrasting sharply with rural villages where traditional life persists.
Chinese culture is deeply influenced by Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism, emphasizing family, harmony, and respect for hierarchy. Its contributions to the world include the Four Great Inventions: paper, the compass, gunpowder, and printing. Today, China is a fascinating mix of ancient tradition and hyper-modernity, aiming to reclaim its historical position as a central kingdom of the world.
China administers 22 provinces, five autonomous regions, four direct-controlled municipalities and two special administrative regions—Hong Kong and Macau—each with distinct legal systems, currencies and even different sides of the road for traffic. The country's population briefly peaked around 1.412 billion in 2021 and has since begun to shrink for the first time in 60 years, a demographic pivot with major economic consequences. Mandarin serves as the state language and is written in a simplified character set introduced in 1956 that reduced the stroke count of thousands of characters; Hong Kong and Taiwan retain the traditional characters, meaning a native speaker from Shanghai and one from Kaohsiung read the same language in visibly different scripts. Beyond Mandarin, at least 297 living languages are still spoken across the mainland, including Cantonese, Wu, Uyghur and Tibetan.
